The 2014 National School SCRABBLE Championship will be held at One Hasbro Place in Providence, RI on April 26–27, 2014. It is open to U.S. and Canadian students in Grades 4–8, and the winning two-player team will receive a $10,000 prize. This webpage discusses NASPA’s involvement in the event, which will as in recent years be to provide our tournament management expertise during the event. Official news about the event can currently be found at Hasbro's School SCRABBLE webpage.

Competitors and Coaches

Please visit the online registration page ASAP and pay $100/team to reserve your place. Please note that the charge on your credit card will be to Living It Loving It, the U.K.-based parent company of event organizer Mind Sports International.

There are a limited number of places available, and registration will close on April 11th.

If you'd like to practice with forms similar to the ones that will be used in play, you can download these ones:

  • tally sheet (score slip used to submit results at end of game)
  • score sheet (used to keep track of results during game)

Travel

Accommodation

There are several hotels within easy walking distance of the event site. Hasbro has booked a block of rooms at the Hilton Providence across the street, accessible through this booking link, and as described in the main event page includes complimentary breakfast buffet on Saturday and Sunday.

Getting There

Providence Amtrak Station, 100 Gaspee Street, is 0.6 miles from the tournament site, a 13-minute walk.

The nearest airports to the tournament site are as follows.

PVD Providence, RI 9 miles, 12 minutes (car), 37 minutes (bus)
BOS Boston (Logan), MA 51 miles, 1 hour (car)
BDL Hartford (Bradley), CT 80 miles, 90 minutes (car)

Qualifying Events

The Championship has always been an open event, but some regions hold qualifying tournaments so that they can honor a team with a regional title for them to carry to the Nationals.

Indiana State School SCRABBLE Championship

  • If you have students in third grade, bring them along so they can enjoy the championship atmosphere and compete with other students their age. You will not need to fill out a registration form for them. If you have an uneven number, we will find a way to pair them up. Please indicate the number of students attending who will be under the fourth grade level somewhere on your registration forms so that we will have an idea of how many will be joining us.

Toronto School SCRABBLE Championship

  • Format:
    • Eastern Qualifier: Bowmore Public School, February 25, 3 rounds
    • Western Qualifier: Swansea Public School, February 27, 3 rounds
    • Championship: Bayview Glen School, March 4, 4 rounds
  • Entry fee: $10 per 2-player team. Maximum 8 players + 2 alternates per school.
  • Registration deadline: January 31.
