WESPA Tournaments

In January 2025, WESPA announced that tournaments would only be sanctioned in the territory of its members with the permission of the local member involved.

NASPA represents the United States and Canada in WESPA. By default, all NASPA tournaments that use the Collins lexicon are eligible to also be rated by WESPA.

NASPA will currently approve WESPA rating of non-NASPA events in North America provided all of the following criteria are met.

Criterion Explanation
The applicant must be a NASPA member in good standing at the time of application and throughout the proposed event. Being a NASPA member imposes obligations under the Code of Conduct on the applicant.
The proposed event must follow the NASPA Tournament Committee’s guidelines for geographic and schedule conflicts. NASPA tournament directors are entitled to their customary protection from competing events under NASPA’s control.
The applicant must contribute to the NASPA Foundation for Youth Literacy an amount equal to or greater than the NASPA participation fee that would have been payable if their event had been rated by NASPA. NASPA and its partner foundation work to raise funds to promote youth literacy through competitive Scrabble play, and to ensure the continuation of a decades-long tradition of tournaments for players of all ages. All our tournaments contribute equally to these missions.
The applicant will acknowledge that WESPA rating of the event has been approved by NASPA in the event flyer and other materials. Other event organizers need to know that NASPA approval is required; participants need to know that it was received.
The applicant must pay the WESPA ratings levy directly to WESPA. NASPA’s approval should not be taken as an offer of financial support for the event.
The applicant must submit the tournament results in the required format to WESPA. NASPA’s approval should not be taken as an offer of logistical support of the event.
