The 2014 National School SCRABBLE Championship will be held at One Hasbro Place in Providence, RI on April 25–27, 2014. This webpage discusses NASPA’s involvement in the event, which we expect will as in recent years be to provide our tournament management expertise during the event. Official news about the event can currently be found at Hasbro's School SCRABBLE webpage.

Competitors and Coaches

As of January 21, 2014, a final agreement is not in place concerning the details of the event, but negotiations are proceeding smoothly. We understand that competitors need as much time as possible to prepare for the event, and apologize for the fact that final details are not yet available.

We recommend that qualifying tournaments and local fundraising efforts proceed without waiting for further details to be officially released, as we do not see any possibility of a change of date or venue.

Tentative Schedule

Some aspects of the event schedule are still being discussed, and it is not yet ready for publication. Please note however that game play will take place on Saturday and Sunday this year (April 26 and 27), and not on Friday and Saturday as in recent years. Those wishing to make travel arrangements prior to the official release of the schedule should ensure that they are able to remain on site until 7:00 P.M. Sunday (the latest possible time envisaged for the end of the prize ceremony). It is not yet certain whether registration will take place together on Friday evening (to be followed by an after hours activity) or on Saturday morning; it would be safest to plan to arrive on Friday afternoon.

Staff and Volunteers

We have not yet begun recruiting staff or volunteers for our part of the event, and will not do so until a formal agreement is in place. If you are interested in helping out at the event though, please feel free to email us at info@scrabbleplayers.org

Travel

A list of hotels and event rates will be published as soon as they are available.

Providence Amtrak Station, 100 Gaspee Street, is 0.6 miles from the tournament site, a 13-minute walk.

The nearest airports to the tournament site are as follows.

PVD Providence, RI 9 miles, 12 minutes (car), 37 minutes (bus)
BOS Boston (Logan), MA 51 miles, 1 hour (car)
BDL Hartford (Bradley), CT 80 miles, 90 minutes (car)

Qualifying Events

The Championship has always been an open event, but some regions hold qualifying tournaments so that they can honor a team with a regional title for them to carry to the Nationals.

Organizers of regional championships are welcome to send information for posting here.

  • If you have students in third grade, bring them along so they can enjoy the championship atmosphere and compete with other students their age. You will not need to fill out a registration form for them. If you have an uneven number, we will find a way to pair them up. Please indicate the number of students attending who will be under the fourth grade level somewhere on your registration forms so that we will have an idea of how many will be joining us.
